My First Custom GPT: The Environmental Marketing Co-Pilot

Upon publishing of 3 Ways the Federal Trade Commission Can Put a Stop to Climate Greenwashing, I began thinking about how I might put the knowledge base I’d developed to future good use. And then Open Ai announced the Custom GPT Capability.

In doing research for the article with the Change Climate Project I had compiled a rather unique knowledge base—a comprehensive analysis of over 450 pages of comment letters submitted to the United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regarding the "Guides for the Use of Environmental Marketing Claims," commonly known as the Green Guides. These comments were provided by more than 40 leading organizations, including 23 nonprofit and 19 for-profit entities. These organizations span a variety of sectors such as consumer packaged goods, energy, environmental and consumer advocacy, government, industry and trade associations, and professional services.

The focus of these comment letters is on the efficiency, costs, benefits, and regulatory impact of the Green Guides. The intention is to assess whether to retain, modify, or rescind them. This body of comments provides a rich source of insights into current opinions and practices regarding environmental marketing, particularly in areas like greenwashing, carbon offsets/credits, and the general sentiment towards the Green Guides.

Using Chat GPT 4, I created a prompt to analyze 450 PDF pages of public comments. In addition to capturing comment summaries and general sentiment, my prompt also analyzed targeted sentiment related to carbon credits/offsets and consumer-facing labels and terminology.

With this content neatly organized in Dovetail, I then I exported to CSV and created a streamlined version suitable for training a custom GPT.

The Environmental Marketing Co-Pilot is now live in the Open AI GPT Storefront.

Environmental Marketing Co-Pilot

How can it help?

Let’s ask…

Me:

What are some things you can help a marketer with?

GPT:

As an Environmental Marketing Co-Pilot, I can assist marketers in several key areas, particularly related to environmental claims in marketing. Here's how I can help:

Analysis of Environmental Claims: I can analyze specific marketing language or claims for compliance with the latest sentiments and guidelines, particularly in light of recent comments on the FTC Green Guides.

Guidance on Greenwashing: I offer advice on avoiding greenwashing, ensuring that environmental claims are truthful, substantiated, and not misleading.

Information on Carbon Offsets/Credits: I can provide insights into the use of carbon offsets and credits in marketing, ensuring these claims are accurate and comply with relevant guidelines.

Compliance with Green Guides: I can guide marketers on how to align their environmental marketing strategies with the current state of the FTC Green Guides.

Transparent and Accurate Marketing Practices: My goal is to ensure that your environmental marketing practices are both transparent and accurate, avoiding legal scrutiny and consumer mistrust.

Would you like to explore any of these areas in more detail, or is there a specific marketing language or claim you'd like me to analyze?

Give it a spin and let me know what you think!
